Voting methods overview

Pick how each position is voted on and counted.

Every position has its own method, so one ballot can mix them. Set it when you add or edit the position.

MethodVoter doesResult
PluralityPicks up to N candidatesEach pick counts 1
ApprovalTicks every candidate they acceptEach tick counts 1
ScoreRates each candidate in a range you setScores add up

Ranked choiceRanks candidates in orderCounted by IRV, STV, or Borda
QuadraticSpends credits, where extra votes for one candidate cost moreVotes add up; see Quadratic voting

Each method has its own rules on the position form: selection limits, score range, point budget, ranking limits, or credit budget.

Two rules to know

  • Quadratic voting needs a Starter or Custom plan and an event end date. It cannot be combined with weighted voting in the same event.
  • Weighted voting is not a method. It multiplies each voter's ballot by their weight and works with all methods. See Weighted voting.

Decide on the method before voting starts. Changing it after ballots come in changes what those ballots mean.
